Lydia Morgan Is County STAR

Lydia Morgan, the STAR student for Piedmont Academy was named STAR student for Jasper County during a luncheon held last Thursday, Feb. 28, at Monticello First United Methodist Church.

The Monticello Kiwanis Club hosted the luncheon to recognize the local STAR students and STAR teachers.

Tu-Tran “Shey” Nguyen, the daughter of Huyen Le of Monticello, was the Jasper County High School STAR Student, who chose Karen Martin as her STAR Teacher. Ms. Nguyen plans to attend the University of Georgia.

Lydia Grace Morgan, the daughter of Bill and Amy Morgan of Monticello, was the Piedmont Academy STAR Student, who selected Bobbi Sauls as her STAR Teacher. Ms. Morgan plans to attend North Georgia College.

The STAR program was created to focus public attention on Georgia’s out-standing high school students and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development.

Greg Williams, Monticello Kiwanis Club President, introduced the special guests including Jasper County High School (JCHS) Principal Howard Fore; Piedmont Academy (PA) Headmaster Dr. Michael Rossi; PA Counselor Missy Braden; JCHS Counselor Toni Reese and Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce President Nancy Arnold.

Mr. Williams then introduced Jimmy Jordan, PAGE District 11 representative and Jasper County resident, who told the group about the purpose and history of the STAR program.

Mr. Jordan then introduced the school honorees and presented both STAR Students and STAR Teachers with the framed certificate commemorating the award.

Miss Morgan will represent Jasper County in the Region Competition.

To obtain the STAR student nomination, a student must have the highest score in one sitting on the Scholastic Aptitude Test taken through the November test date of their senior year and be in the top 10 percent or top 10 students in their class. Each high school STAR student is asked to name his or her STAR Teacher.

High School STAR students compete for honors in the school system or county, then go on to compete for region honors in the STAR regions. Region winners and their STAR teachers are then invited to Atlanta to compete for the state STAR awards.

During the past 50 years, the STAR program has honored more than 21,000 high school seniors who have, in turn, chosen their STAR teachers to share in this recognition.

The Georgia STAR program is sponsored by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE), The PAGE Foundation, Inc., the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.
