Back-to-School Rally to be Held Saturday
The Back-to-School Rally that has become an annual event for Jasper County will take place on the Square in Monticello this Saturday, July 30, from 9 a.m. to noon.
All parents with children are invited to attend. There will be tons of back-to-school give-a-ways and a resource fair for general information. There will be free entertainment for the children, such as a bouncy house and a big blowup slide, along with face painting.
Here are some reminders for different activities in and around the Square.

•Parents who have applied for assistance with school supplies will be picking them up at the Monticello Presbyterian Church.
It is located at 246 E. Washington Street and will include a gift certificate to Sunrise Thrift Store for three sets of children’s clothing for school for each child.
•Sunrise Thrift Store is located at 139 W. Washington Street.
• Jasper County Health Department is opening its doors and will offer free vision and hearing screens at 336 E. Greene Street.
• Persons who received gift certificates for a free hair cut or oil change for your car should follow the directions on the certificate.
• Smokey the Bear, through the U.S. Forest Service, will be available for photos with the children between 10 a.m. and noon at the Visitor’s Center, located at 119 W. Washington Street.
• “Leap Into Reading” Frog will also be on site at the Visitor’s Center signing up young future readers for free books. This is a Ferst Foundation for Childhood Literacy event. Reading to young children is proven to improve their school success.
• Child Identification Program (CHIP) will offer parents peace of mind to parents knowing that should anything ever happen to their child, they will have an I.D. with the vital information to distribute to authorities.
The I.D.’s are created using the EZ Child I.D. System, a comprehensive digital fingerprinting child identification system. In only five minutes, a child I.D. card is printed for each parent or guardian free of charge. Child I.D. cards feature a child’s photo, fingerprints, contact information and pertinent information needed by the police in case of an emergency. Children must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. The Masonic Lodge is donating this service.
• Fire Department and ambulance vehicles will be located near the courthouse for children to tour. The Emergency Medical Service will provide blood pressure checks and offer first aid.
• The Market Festival will be going on during this time. Local vendors will be on hand selling their “farm-grown goodness,” and other wares.
