Monticello Elections Scheduled

Qualifying for city of Monticello elections is just a month away, and there has been little talk about who will run for which offices.
After the last regular City Council meeting, July 12, only Councilman Bobby Jacobs would commit to running again, and said he was not sure what office he would seek. He has since decided to run for Mayor Pro-tem, the seat currently held by Russell Gross. In the past Mr. Gross has said he would not seek re-election, but when asked July 12, said he was not sure.

The only other person who has committed to running for the Monticello Council is Roger Harrison, a Jasper County native who will seek the seat being vacated by Mr. Jacobs.

Because the council sought and achieved legislation doing so, council elections will be for staggered terms. Mr. Jacobs currently holds Post 1 in District 2. Persons seeking that seat will be elected to a two year term. Post 2 in District 2 is currently held by Katherine Alexander. The person being elected to that seat will have a four-year term.

In Council District 1, Bryan Standifer holds Post 1, and Molly Pompey is Post 2 Councilwoman.

The mayor pro-tem will be elected to a four-year stint, and the mayor to a two year term. Currently Glenn Newsome is mayor, and he has not announced if he will seek re-eelction.
Qualifying for city elections begins Monday, Aug. 29.
