Spring Is Here
I have spring fever! And after a weekend of beautiful weather I can see why I am seeing people pull out their flip-flops, capris, and shorts in the anticipation of what is my favorite season.
With spring comes mild weather (we hope, but after Monday the weather may be more than mild), spring sports, including opening day at Turner Field (Go Braves)!
Spring brings pretty flowers, and some occasional allergies to these colorful delicacies that our eyes and nose enjoy so much.
Spring also brings a full schedule for me as I cover high school sports, and right now I am stretched between this job, my weekend gig, and high school sports at both Jasper County High School and Piedmont Academy.
I am covering baseball, varisty-JV-middle school; track, boys and girls soccer, tennis, and some golf, so as you can imagine I am stretched thin.
However after all of that I have a confession…I played hooky Saturday when I was supposed to be taking baseball pictures.
I had planned all week to go to the tournament of games held at Piedmont beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday. I was going to hang there and enjoy my favorite spring sport until about 1 p.m. when I was going to go across town to the ‘Canes game.
Well, I made it to neither. I worked Friday night and got home in the wee hours of Saturday morning, around 5 a.m. and had to get up around 9 to run some errands in town and out of town.
As you can imagine when I awoke, I was a bit groggy and feeling resentful that I was unable to sleep a bit longer on my day off.
After my shower and running some errands I treated myself to breakfast and enjoyed every minute of it.
I got to spend the first half of the day with my cousin Elizabeth and other than her driving (just kidding) we had a glorious time together, shopping and catching up.
I also got some good phone time with my ever dramatic, but entertaining sister who lives in Carrollton.
On the way back to Monticello, around noon, I realized how grateful I was to be awake on this glorious day.
It was warm, and the sun warmed my face, welcoming me to stay out in it all day. I was glad to have most of the day to spend outdoors.
I was still thinking about the game when I got a call to do some outdoorsy fun Saturday afternoon, and that I did. I treated myself to an afternoon just for me with a wonderful friend. And it was A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.
I questioned my actions at first as a bit selfish, and realized that I needed time for me occasionally, and work would just have to wait.
I enjoyed Saturday being outside and shopping in a garden center or two getting excited about improving my landscaping around my house in the coming months.
I got to enjoy an early dinner and drinks with friends on a warm patio, which is an ideal place to be on a 70 degree day.
I also enjoyed Sunday, the weather relaxing and other gestures that were catered to me.
Monday, however was a different story. I came to work a bit stressed as I was worried that I wouldn’t have any sports news to fill up ‘my pages.’
This is where I have to give some thanks. Through the great parents and some teachers and coaches I got pictures, scores and words, more than enough to fill.
I want to thank Amy Scroggs, Coaches Chris Jenkins, Buddy Cain, Matt Riden, Kim McMichael, Judy Nelson, Mike Cavender, Coaches Danny Camp and Daniel Funt for all they help me with.
These people are key in helping me identify players, confirm final scores, and give me update and schedule changes in a timely manner, sometimes up to midnight on Tuesday.
I want to thank all of you for making my job a bit easier, and for allowing me to have some time for myself this weekend. Without you my job would take up a lot more time, and the quality would suffer.
I look forward to the coming months when the weather warms, and I can be outdoors more. I also thank and look forward to attending more sporting events locally and encourage anyone in the community to come out and support these young athletes this spring.
Who knows you may enjoy you favorite past time and the spring weather while supporting local youth!
