More Interesting Places

At my last writing I left you with newly found places that I’ve experienced in and around the Macon and Warner Robins areas.

The first new place that I went was to Lane Southern Orchards. It is just past Russell Parkway in Warner Robins and expands miles and miles with tons of peach trees in extensive orchards. There is a real working farm that visitors can experience along with picturesque views of vast lands and a small air strip.

When I visited recently I had some of the best peach cobbler I’ve ever put into my mouth. I also bought some peach wine and some peach pepper jelly…yum!

While we sat and ate our cobbler I got to see children playing and small planes flying overhead all from the comfort from a rocking chair. We sat and talked long after they closed. It was hard to leave.

On my second outing, well date, I was taken to Ocmulgee Riverwalk Park. When we got there I realized that I had driven over the park that runs along the Ocmulgee River and is accessed just off of Spring Street. It runs parallel to I-16 and I-75 along the river with spectacular views of Rose Hill Cemetery and parts of downtown Macon. There is a long trail where we encountered bicyclists, kayaking, walkers, dogs, and children playing on the playground equipment.

Another place that is spectacular that also holds a great place in my memories is Downtown Grill. A few years ago my Papa, Bill Hughes, took my Mama and I there before we went to see Rob Evan perform at the Grand Opera House. Rob has local ties and sings on Broadway and was doing a show locally.

We had gone down early and were looking for an appetizer and beverage before the show. That day was one that I will never forget. I had tried my best to get out of going, as it was the Thursday night that my Daddy died. I remember wanting the distraction but knowing that I didn’t want to get all fancied up and see people that I knew.

Either way, I mustered up the strength to go and into Downtown Grill we went. The three of us enjoyed good wine and appetizers including my favorite, tomatoes and mozzarella. It will be a day I will never forget as Downtown Grill is in an ally and we literally stumbled (I tripped) over the entrance.

Since working downtown, I frequent the Grill often. They have great wine, servers, and food and is a great place to experience. The last time I was there I even spotted a few famous actors such as Christopher Meloni and Harrison Ford…yes in Macon!

We also visited another park, Washington Park, in downtown Macon. This park was smaller and played host to several families lounging, kids playing Frisbee, and bubbling fountains throughout. It is the ideal place to take a lunch or a blanket and a book and simply be lazy. It’s nestled neatly between a busy street and residential houses.

These are just a few gems that I’ve continued to discover just about 45 miles away. I am always for staying and supporting our hometown, but if you need to get out of town I highly recommend any of these places…especially the outdoor locations this Spring
