Garden Club Contributes Much
For years now I’ve been reading in this newspaper about the Monticello Garden Club, and I find those ladies fascinating.
You see, my Mama, Kathy, has a green thumb and her porch and yard are always beautiful. She plants seasonal plants in the Spring, gets on her hands and knees and weeds flower beds and always has a plant or a tree that is green.
I have learned that I can now keep a plant alive for longer than a season and although I’m starting easy, with two peace lilies that I know how to care for, I would love to have a beautiful yard all year round.
That being said, the ladies of the garden club went from being “just another story to proof,” to something I now look forward to hearing updates on.
I know the names of these ladies and they should be commended as they care for the beautiful Square that we all travel around often, in my case multiple times a day.
We live in a very picturesque town. I know that I, for one, have not always had a sense of pride in Monticello, but in taking the time to drive around our city and county recently, and look— no actually see—how much beauty there is here makes me proud.
The ladies of the Monticello Garden Club volunteer their time to maintain the beautiful Square. They plant and tend to the flower beds on the Square adding to the beautification. These ladies make sure that the grass is cut, and there is pine straw in place, all on their own time and simply because it’s something that they enjoy.
The pride that the ladies have in both their work on the Square and maintaining West View Cemetery is evident. It shows!
As I think about my future I look forward to having a pretty yard of my own. As most of you know, or have seen, my front yard is currently ALL dirt, and anything would be better than that!
I live on West Washington where the DOT has been for over a year moving pipes and widening to make a turning lane.
All I have seen is dirt. My front yard is nonexistent and as I noticed over the weekend my azaleas, those beautiful bushes that bloom once a year each spring, of purple and pink, have bloomed. I can see them, but just slightly as DOT orange barrier is more the “color of the season.”
Like I said, anything is better than dirt!
For now, I make do and keep reading. I know that there are more articles in this week’s News as Spring continues and the planting and gardening season approaches.
I just want to remind readers of what a wonderful town this is, and with the ladies who make up the garden club as residents, I think that we stand to be recognized for the beauty right here, in Monticello.
Thank you ladies for your hard work and volunteer dedication. It does not go unnoticed.
