Proceeds from this week’s race will benefit Aubrie Gordon, a young lady fighting cancer.
At the early age of three, Aubrie was diagnosed with her first rare cancer, Pluero Pulmonary Blastoma. After chemotherapy and experimental treatments she was cancer free.
For 11 years Aubrie’s cancer did not return, until 2016 when she was diagnosed with papillary carcinoma of the thyroid. They removed her thyroid and she was given radiation treatments. Within the year she has been diagnosed with another form of primary cancer.
She started to experience severe abdominal pains in September 2017 which led her to the emergency room twice. She followed up with her doctor and a mass was found in her reproductive organs. The mass was removed on October 10, 2017 and the devastating news that once again she had cancer.
She is still in the process of staging the cancer with multiple scans and bone marrow aspirations to determine if the cancer has spread. Currently the treatment for Rhabdomyosarcoma is going to be chemotherapy and possibly additional radiation treatments. She is scheduled to have her port placed on November 10 and her first round of chemotherapy will begin on November 13, which she will be admitted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta to have administered.
She will have chemotherapy administered every week and the length of treatment is to be determined based on staging. As of right now 13 weeks of chemotherapy have been planned but additional treatments and surgeries may still be needed pending all the test results. The oncology team now wants to do genetic screening due to this being her third primary cancer.
Aubrie is 17 years old, and is a senior at the Connections Academy in Covington. She loves being involved with her church, helping others and playing the drums for the music ministry. She has faith in God that he will take care of her and give her strength and comfort during this difficult time.
Her favorite Bible verse is Isaiah 41:10, So do not fear, for I am with you, do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
