Songwriter with Local Roots Aspires To Make It Big

Steve Mark Anglin, aka R.C. Cowboy, who spent many of his formative years in Monticello, Jasper County, Georgia, is trying to make a mark in the country music world.

Mr. Anglin is the only child of the late Cecil and Exa Anglin of Jasper County. He attended Washington Park Elementary School and Monticello High School from 1975 to 1985, then graduated in Greene County.

He now lives in Winterville. Mr. Anglin said he has been writing music since he was 14 years old, and has been singing since 1980. He has attended many “open mike” nights in Greene County, Athens, and even in Nashville.

He said he watched Coal Miner’s Daughter at the theater in Jackson when he was a child, and he fell in love with Loretta Lynn. He joined the fan club, and collected memorabilia, and now has a large scrapbook full of pictures and info on Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty as well.

He writes songs about real life, and he has written one that he says is a combination of his life and his parents and grandparents lives, as he heard the stories coming down through the years. The song talks of making turtle stew, and also mentions being from the same town as Trisha Yearwood.

One of the musicians he admires much and tries to emulate is Trisha’s husband, Garth Brooks, and he also sings and performs hits from Hank Williams Jr.

Mr. Anglin, or R.C. Cowboy took voice and guitar lessons from the Athens School of Music. However that was fairly recently, and he has been writing songs for some 38 years. He said the songs are mostly about his life. When he was younger, he sang with Harry Lynn Manville and the Stardusters at the VFW, he said, in June, of 1980, and his first recording was done with Franklin Lynch in Monticello.

More recently he has played on the radio station in Monroe, and he is still looking for his big break. He has written more than 25 songs, he said, and he has a dozen of them recorded on a CD which he shared with the News office.
