Monticello Civic Club Installs Officers

The changing of the guard, so to speak, took place at the Monticello Civic Club meeting last Thursday, with new officers taking office.

Taking the helm as president is Kathy Mudd, and Susan Stone is president-elect. Walker Jordan remains treasurer, and Kasey Hall remains secretary. Les Steele (foreground) is immediate past president and serves as an advisor to the new officers.

The Monticello Civic Club serves the children of Jasper County, holding several fund raisers each year , then giving the money back to the community. The club recently sponsored the Venison Cook-Off at the Deer Festival, and will have its annual pancake supper in conjunction with Light Up Monticello on December 15.

The pancake supper has been a breakfast for the last few years, but the club decided to try it in conjunction with Light Up Monticello this year.

The club also sponsors the annual talent and art showcase which will be held on February 23 next year.

The civic club will return the money it makes at these events to organizations that serve the children of Jasper County, such as the school’s music and art programs, 4-H, ML&J fund, Seuss on the Loose, and lots more entities.

Previously, the Civic Club was part of Kiwanis International, but the membership voted to stop its association with Kiwanis, so that all money raised can be spent locally.

The club meets for lunch on the first and third Thursday of each month at Monticello First United Methodist Church. Students and teachers of the month from Jasper County High School and Piedmont Academy are honored each month in addition to the funds donated to various causes. The club also holds the STAR student banquet each year.

More members are needed. Anyone interested in helping the children of Jasper County is invited to join the group. RSVP is asked, so that the proper amount of food is prepared.
