Bonita Tanner Is Teacher of the Year
Bonita Tanner, the daughter of Bonnie Tanner and the late Mell Tanner of Monticello, has been named Teacher of the Year at Brunswick High School (BHS) in Brunswick, Ga.
Ms. Tanner has been a member of the BHS faculty for over two decades. She has impacted her school and her community throughout her tenure as a Pirate, said one of her letters of recommendation.
She shows her students how important they are to her and truly cares about each student that she encounters at BHS. Ms. Tanner has held several roles throughout her career as teacher, coach and athletic coordinator. Nobody rivals her in the amount of spirit she displays as a Pirate.
She comes to school with a smile on her face and uses her huge personality to lift others up and is the ultimate role model for the Pirate Nation.
Ms. Tanner is in her 29th year teaching at Brunswick High School. She taught health and physical education for 23 years but for these last three years she has been doing Edgenuity in the Success Academy helping students in credit recovery and credit repair.
“I try to get these students back on track to graduate,” she said.
She coached for 17 years: JV girls basketball and girls softball, varsity girls softball, varsity girl’s tennis, and varsity girl’s golf.
“I was privileged to coach a state champion golfer who went on to play at South Carolina on scholarship and eventually play on the LPGA tour. I was also Athletic Coordinator at Brunswick High School.
To be named teacher of the year, Ms. Tanner received many letters of recommendation outlining her contributions. Her principal had high praise for her, as did co-workers.
She is a 1985 graduate of Piedmont Academy.
