Mac Barton Is Heisman High School Local Winner

Mac Barton, a senior at Jasper County High School, was recently named the school finalist in the Heisman High School Scholarship Competition sponsored by Heisman Trophy Trust and Acceptance Insurance. Mr. Barton was among 13 JCHS seniors nominated for this honor.

To apply for the competition, an athlete had to be nominated by a local teacher or coach, must have a cumulative weighted high school grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or better, participate in at least one of the 48 sports, and be a leader in his/her school and community.

Mr. Barton is a four-year starter on both the Hurricane football and baseball teams. He has a weighted GPA of 4.07 and he is an active member of the Future Business Leaders of America, Future Career & Community Leaders of America, and the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

“Mac was an easy student to nominate for this award,” according to Amy Scroggs, who was among several teachers and administrators to nominate the 13 seniors. “He’s just an all-around good kid. He makes good grades, he works hard both on and off the field, and he’s pleasant to have in class.”

Because Barton was the local winner of the High School Heisman, he will advance to the state competition.

The Heisman Memorial Trophy is annually awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the nation.

The Heisman High School Scholarship extended the Heisman prestige to the nation’s most esteemed seniors by recognizing and rewarding outstanding scholar-athletes who understand that the most important victories not only happen on the field, but also in their schools and communities, the announcement said.
