Students Harvest Lettuce
Hydroponic farming is a fun way to study plant life cycles quickly. All second grade Jasper County Primary School students grew lettuce in hydroponic buckets in their classrooms.
Students learned how to test pH, aerate roots, seed rockwool, and harvest a crop. Students compared hydroponic lettuce to traditional lettuce being grown in dirt.
To compare growing methods each classroom had a hydroponic bucket and bucket with potting soil. Both buckets were started on the same day with lettuce seeds.
Students also tracked how much water was added into each system. The hydroponic lettuce grew at a faster rate and produced more lettuce leaves. The lettuce classroom buckets were at full bounty after just eight weeks of growth.
