Jasper Jubilee
The Jasper Jubilee is coming up in just over six weeks. Are you ready? Are you participating? Are you anxious to be a part of something exciting?
The Jasper Jubilee was initially held in the 1980s, and died out for some reason. It was designed to celebrate Monticello and Jasper County. Various vendors are welcomed, but it is designed for us…the hometown folks.
It all starts on Saturday, April 12, when there will be a Tour of Homes which commences at the historic Thomas Persons Hall (TPH). And, before taking off for the homes and other sites on the tour, stay at TPH and see the fantastic flower show presented by the Monticello Garden Club.
We have some great gardeners and flower designers in our community and they really show their stuff at the flower show. They held their show at TPH two years ago and it was a real treat, so I, for one, am looking forward to this one.
The building itself is something to see, and when you have the treat of seeing beautiful flower arrangements throughout, it can’t be beat.
Tour day kicks off a week of activities that culminate with the Jubilee on April 19. Sunday, April 13, Bridging Monticello, the organizer for the Jubilee, is planning a community picnic on the Square from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m.
Everyone is encouraged to pack a picnic or pick up food from any local restaurant and come eat it on the Square with your neighbors.
On Monday a week-long scavenger hunt that everyone can take part in and maybe learn a little more about their community in the process begins.
Tuesday is Tasty Tuesday where all local restaurants have been approached about offering a Jubilee special. Some have already signed up, and others are still being solicited.
Wednesday will offer more scavenger hunt clues, then Thursday will feature a fashion show and headwear contest. The fashion show will feature models dressed in their finest form the many stores in town who offer clothes.
The headwear contest is open to everyone, For the contest, participants will design a hat or Easter bonnet to be displayed during the fashion show. The goal of the headwear is for attendees to guess your organization from the design. Friday will offer music Bingo in the city courtyard behind the Monticello City Hall. Everyone is encouraged to bring their own chair, and a marker, and be ready to holler Bingo.
It all culminates at Saturday, April 19 when a 5K run/walk will kick off activities followed by a whole day of fun. This is where local clubs, organizations, school and church groups can choose what activity they want to offer to raise money for their cause.
Local artisans are still being sought, and anyone interested in having a booth is asked to contact Bridging Monticello at Bridgingmonticello@gmail.com
A hot dog eating contest, water balloon fight and 50/50 raffle are already scheduled, but there are lots of exciting opportunities to entertain and raise money for your organization. .
