The Little Things

I’ve had an interesting last week or so. They say to find the joy in the little things, and I have found much joy! Last Thursday I had the opportunity to go see ballroom dancing at the University of Georgia. Julia Aldridge of Monticello, the daughter of David and Linda Aldridge, took ballroom dancing as a physical education class in her freshman year. She loved it so much, she stayed active with it, and now in her senior year took part in one of her last performances. Linda was kind enough to invite me to the show, and boy, it was good!

Dancing through Life Ballroom Magic 2025 did not disappoint! Julia, along with her fellow students, along with alumni and members of a professional dance company entertained for nearly two hours, and it was phenomenal! That was a new experience for me, and one I’m glad I had.

Then, a little less exciting, Jimmy and I decided to ride over to Eatonton Saturday for lunch. He’d been seeing an advertisement for the Philly Cheese chicken sandwich at Zaxby’s and wanted to try it. He also heard good reviews about What-a-burger, which neither one of us had eaten at previously, and wanted to try it. So, we struck out, and decided on the hamburger. We both got the original sandwich, as we had no idea what to expect. One of us got fires, and the other onion rings, which we shared. It was good, but we have good hamburgers right here in Monticello too, so I’m not sure it’s worth the trip. Of course, from home it’s not that far since we live five miles east of the Square…heck almost halfway to Eatonton.

I also had the opportunity to dine with two of my grandchildren on different days last week, and that’s always fun. Especially because that means quality time with my adult daughters as well. Last week Roxie and I met Emily and Brystol in Madison for lunch, then later in the week, Hannah and 20-month-old Adeline picked me up for Mexican (what else in Monticello, which boasts three Mexican restaurants).

Then, I got to spend more time with Adeline Monday when I kept her while her parents went to the hospital, cause Daddy was in pain. Turns out he had appendicitis, and now has no appendix. I also spent a little time with Melody, but her other grandma, Nana, got here about the time she got out of school, so I didn’t have much play time with her. But, no problem, I see a good bit of her.

Missing much work Monday turned out o.k., since I had to work til nearly 10 p.m. anyway, covering the County Commission meeting. And Tuesday, the Board of Education meets, and I get to cover that too, making for a tough work week this week.

That’s why you take joy in the little things, so you can endure the necessary things, like long county commission meetings. Turns out, from people I talk to, several people turned in on Facebook where they stream meetings live, and they stayed to the bitter end too. (Of course they could be their pajamas.) I wonder what the coming week will hold…more grandchild time, I bet. Oh, goodie!
