School Board Holds First Public Hearing

The Jasper County School Board held a public hearing on House Bill 581 before its regular meeting last Tuesday, Jan. 21, on a snowy evening after which school had been cancelled.

Only one person attended the public hearing, and he didn’t speak, according to Supt. Kenny Garland. However, Mr. Garland presented a powerpoint presentation on the legislation.

The group dispensed with any business other than that requiring action. No informational presentations were given. Board Chair Towonder Dennis was there as were board members Michele Coward, Michele Celani, and Matt Kelly. Board member Larry “Bubba” Wilson, Jr. was absent.

The board approved a one-time bonus for all school nutrition employees based in cafeterias throughout the school system of $375 to be issued with the March 2025 payroll.

The board approved a memorandum of agreement regarding leasehold taxation for TNT Door and Drawer Company. The company is looking to relocate a business in the old Dexter Axle facility.

The Board approved to adjust the regular bus driver salary schedule from a starting pay of Grade 18 Step 9 ($16.66 per hour) to Grade 22 Step 9 ($19.34 per hour) effective with payroll calendar date of February 2, 2025. The first check where adjustments are reflected will be March 27, 2025.

The December Financial and Expenditure Report was presented. Supt. Garland cited revenues increased significantly due to property tax collection during the month of December. At the midpoint of the fiscal year, revenues are 2.08% ahead of projections while expenditures are 8.96% below expectations.

The board approved numerous overnight field trips, facilities use requests, and two fund raisers.
