Jimmy Who?
In 1976 an nationally, unknown Georgian ran for President and won.
Musician Charlie Daniels known as a stauch Republican had a famous song then, “The Devil went down to Georgia.”
Somehow the Republican and the Georgian found their way to each other in the right time.
Charlie Daniels was on tour. He and his band arrived in Savannah for a one night stand at their Civic Center. Getting seats on an upper level was the best place to see the whole stage.
The last song of the concert was the hugely popular, “Devil went down to Georgia.” The first four notes and the crowd jumped to their feet. The stage lights went dark except for the spotlight over Daniels and his violin. When the song ended, out of the dark background walked a semi-familiar man and as the crowd realized who it was, a roar came up, it was Jimmy Carter. It was then we realized we were attending a fund raiser for Carter.
Who can ever forget the “Devil Went Down to Georgia” and not associate it with President Jimmy Carter?
