We Dodged That Bullet
Around September 26 a storm that had matured into a Category 4 hurricane came ashore in the Big Bend of Central Florida. According to news reports it wiped Steinhatchee, Florida off the map.
We were driving down the west coast of Florida years ago and happened on this town, not really a town back them, but it had a cool little seaside seafood restaurant. Tables were located on the seaside, with a slight breeze from the sea. The fresh seafood was delicious and memorable.
One day I wanted to return again. Steinhatchee and what it had become over the years was washed away.
We had been watching the storm for days, expecting to be in the thick of it. Two days later Helene, the hurricane, took a turn to the right, only hitting the southeastern portion of Georgia, Valdosta, being the main city that took the brunt of the storm.
Thankfully, Jasper County got wind and rain, but no major damage. We had dodged that bullet.
The news from North Carolina showed destroyed towns, neighborhoods, people left with nothing, no way to even be rescued. Six strong tornadoes wiped out what was left of some places. The news said many of the residents of these mountain towns moved there because it seemed safe.
Help if you can.
