Summertime in Monticello
Summertime in Monticello with nearly 100 degree days. This weather is reminiscent of 1996 when we were host to the Olympics, even the horses were keeling over.
Lucky me I was able to go Athens, Greece in 1997. We took a city tour and went to see the 1896 Olympic Stadium, very beautiful and maintained well. We heard several times that Athens should have gotten the 1996 Olympics instead of Atlanta.
Also, my job in 1996 was downtown Atlanta. Everyday I was approached by people visiting Atlanta from all over the world. Most of the visitors spoke some form of English. With hand signals I was able to give directions to the subway, Underground, Olympic stadium, Peachtree Street.
The only event I attended was the marathon. There were thousands lining Peachtree Street, the news media were hanging precariously on the back of pickup trucks and out the sides of helicopters, all holding cameras.
The street was steaming as we waited to see the first runners and yes, it was several Kenyans, none had any sweat or labored breath and it was the 26th mile.
A month from now we will get to see the Olympics from Paris, France 100 years since the last one held there.
