Changing Seasons

First, I want to thank everyone who reached out to me and asked about Jimmy after my last column which detailed our slightly extended stay in Seattle last month.
Your thoughts and prayers have been appreciated, and they worked! Jimmy is feeling great.
Fall is in the air, and I think it may be his favorite season, like it is mine. He has new energy, and a renewed sense of purpose since his down time last month.
Fall brings the boys of summer (baseball) to a close which I will miss terribly, but I do have a couple more weeks—hopefully with the Braves taking it all. They’re good, no doubt. But, just as in football…on any Saturday…in baseball it’s any day of the week. Games are not played on paper…real people play them and sometimes they are not as good as other times.
But I digress. I mentioned football. That’s a good reason to love fall. Friday night lights for the high schoolers followed by college football Saturday and pro games on Sunday. At this stage in my life, I’m only making time for college ball, but that may change another day.
Like many hereabouts, I’m a big Georgia Bulldog fan. I was in school in Athens when Herschel Walker was grinding up yardage. I remember hearing about how good he was, and thinking, no player is that good. He was. The first time I saw him play, I was amazed.
There have been many other good players since that time, but I’d venture to say ones as good as Herschel don’t come along too often. However, it’s fun to watch all of them, and even if there’s not an individual who stands out like he did, a team coming together and playing well is always fun to watch.
Based on how the Dawgs have looked so far, it’s debatable if they are the best team in college. We’ll get a better idea this Saturday when they take on the Kentucky Wildcats. The plus is the game is in Athens. The downside is the Dawgs have not played as stupendously as we expect thus far this season, seemingly struggling against Auburn last Saturday.
Another great thing about fall is the weather! Cool mornings and nights energize me for the days. And, the days are warm enough no one is going to complain about the “cold” which we will be able to complain about in a few months.
I love a campfire, and it just is hard to get worked up to sit around one when it’s 90 degrees. But now (or soon), it’s cool enough in the evening. Jimmy and I are even planning to gather around the fire one evening soon and roast marshmallows. And maybe hot dogs. It will be fun.
Fall also brings the colorful foliage with the leaves changing with the seasons. It’s so pretty to pay attention to the changing colors. And, fall means the Georiga National Fair as well as several smaller fairs, and festivals galore. Festivals celebrate everything from the deer (here), to apples to loads of other excuses. And don’t forget the holidays—Halloween then Thanksgiving. Fall is fun!
