JCPS Appreciates Maggie Readers Program

Jasper County Primary School was honored to have Maggie Readers back for the 2022 school year.

The adult readers and therapy dogs came to JCPS every Thursday to allow selected second grade students to read with the volunteers. Students were able to spend time with the volunteers and trained therapy dogs.

The volunteers are training to work with students on decoding words, practice comprehension skills, and review sight words.

JCPS is so appreciative of the group of volunteers for their time each week to mentor the young students. Tanya Kingsley started the reading initiative many years ago working with her therapy dog Maggie. Maggie has passed away but the reading tradition has continued with a growing fleet of therapy dogs each week.

Students participating include Jase Cantrell, Carter Kelly, Kinsley Carnes, Mallory Donley, Dom Taylor, Kaden Metzler, Sindy Lucas-Palacios, Will Taylor, Bennett Little, JT Davis, Alexa Barragan, Charlotte Swann, Jayden Martin, Carmen Mitchell, Chevy Taylor, Rhett Thompson, Westin Matthews, Nevaeh Cook, Lane Carnes, Nathan Dale, Jared Jenkins, Shawn Boykin, and Jesse Norman.

Adult volunteers included Ginny Spurlock, Steve Spurlock, Suzy Mitchell, Suzanne Zech, Tanya Kingsley, and Lynn McElheney. Other volunteers not pictured include Nancy Stafford and Velinda Barnes.

The school had a huge celebration to conclude the reading season with students receiving certificates and treats from the reading volunteers.
