Renovation, Restoration, Inspiration

According to a Nielsen TV survey, renovation and home-buying television channels rank fourth most-watched channels.

During the past two years of the pandemic, the reno shows have inspired millions to head to hardware and lumber companies to supply-up. Let’s knock down walls. Oops, was that one of load-bearing walls? How hard can it be to do renovations?

Most of the renovation shows are able to start and finish a kitchen reno in 48 minutes. In reality, if you have ever done just a small project, you know you might be able to get some paint chips in that length of time. Good idea to sleep on any thoughts before proceeding with the nightmare/renovation.

Love the home-buying shows that feature bickering couples who obsess over paint, wallpaper, a chandelier, all while demanding the agent meet their lengthy list of demands, bedrooms, bathrooms, a view of this or that, natural light, pools, brick or stucco, on and on. Excuse me, what about the bowling lanes, duh? If all else fails, build a house and you can end up in divorce court.

Questions: Where do they store all their stuff? Where are the multiple crews doing the work? How do the shows find homeowners with thousands of dollars laying around not being used?

Of course, the answers are the magic of “reality” shows. These shows are for entertainment like most sit-coms. Many folks apparently trust reality shows to be real and have made millions for companies that sell building, plumbing, electrical, etc.

Just for a starter, to get your feet wet, so to speak, paint an accent wall and learn what that entails, drop cloths, paint, paint brushes, ladder, paint roller, and more.

Spring starts those creative juices flowing and can lead to thoughts of all kinds of plans to start a project. Hint, just watch renovations on television.

Happy Spring Y’all.
