Comfort Foods
The Waffle House Index was coined by FEMA and means that when the local Waffle Houses open then we are beginning to begin again.
This past week Waffle Houses all over the state of Georgia opened. Not sure if it is a good or bad thing, yet.
Food as a comfort is well documented. In fact the terminology “comfort food” relates to any thing that you eat that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. For some it is what is called “junk food,” stuff that is not good for you, but again, makes you happy. Many tell me that potato chips or some variation is a favorite. Bet you can’t eat just one!
Three billion websites are devoted to comfort foods and one of those mentioned again and again is chocolate. We do love our chocolate, whether it is in the form of a candy bar or in a drink, yum yum. Pizza is number one on a lot of lists. There are as many pizza toppings as there are shrimp dishes mentioned in “Forrest Gump,” fried shrimp, boiled shrimp, shrimp scampi….
And what about our favorite “B” comfort food, Bread? Why most grocery stores normally have shelves and shelves of various types of bread. When the shelves were getting empty in recent weeks, the old bread maker was hauled out to make a crusty loaf of French bread. Oui, is there anything as comforting as hot bread?
Most will agree that they have a stash of comfort foods. Whether they will admit it outside the family circle, or where it is kept for sure. Think about the weakness you get when you walk past the Little Debbie display or down the candy and cookie aisle. Come on, you know you do.
Just want to say thank you to all the people in the grocery stores, other stores, all the health care workers, all the restaurants, the food bank, the teachers, the newspaper staff that kept us going during this critical time in our history. Let’s all learn from this experience that nothing is to be taken for granted. Stay healthy, Monticello!
