Educators Attend Marine Workshop

Jasper County High School (JCHS) Principal Buddy Cain and Instructional Coach Peyton Proctor attended the U.S. Marine Educators Workshop in Parris Island a few weeks ago.
Four times per year the 6th Marine Corps District sends approximately 80 high school and college educators, counselors and administrators to Marine Corps Recruit Depot (MCRD) Parris Island, S.C. Participants experience life on Parris Island and Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort while they learn leadership qualities that makes the U.S. Marines one of the greatest fighting forces in the world, according to the announcement from the school.
Educators are greeted at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island by illustrious drill instructors and are made to stand on the same historical yellow footprints every Marine has stood upon before entry into recruit training. During their stay, Mr. Cain and Mr. Proctor experienced the variety of opportunities that the Marines offer young people while learning valuable leadership skills they can take back to their school.
Principal Cain said, “I was amazed at the variety of opportunities that the Marines and other branches of our Armed Forces have for young people. Opportunities in the arts, music, technology, photography, engineering and the list goes on and on. It made me reaffirm my core values of setting high standards and holding students accountable”
Mr. Proctor is the Instruction Coach at JCHS and also a former administrator. He said, “the Marine Corps is looking for recruits who can think critically about problems, find creative solutions, and communicate effectively. I believe that is our goal in JCCS for all students, the Marines just take it to another level. I never realized the variety of career opportunities available to students who join the Marine Corps. As a former art teacher, I never knew you could join the USMC and become a photographer, videographer, or graphic artist.”
Mr. Cain and Mr. Proctor thanked Supt. Kenny Garland for being supportive of this leadership training.
