How to Prepare Your Farming Equipment for Spring

When you run a farm for a living, you know that taking care of your equipment is key to a successful and efficient harvest. As the weather warms up and the ground thaws for planting season, you can focus your attention on fine-tuning your machines so they’re in tip-top shape come the first harvest. Prepare your cultivator

One of the first tasks you will likely do come spring is break up the ground to prepare your soil for planting. To ensure your cultivator is ready to go, make sure it’s maintained properly. Check the connections and clean off your cultivator. Watch for signs of corrosion or damage to its structural integrity.

Inspect your tractors

Any sized tractor meant for any function should be checked and given routine maintenance after a long winter or period of rest. Check your tractor’s oil; low oil is one of the quickest engine killers. While you’re at it, give the oil filter a check. This may need to be replaced, depending on its condition. If your tractor is older, consider giving it some easy updates to its inner workings, such as an updated final drive or a hydraulic pump. These might be difficult to install, however, so if you’re inexperienced it may be best to consult a professional.

Test all your equipment

Give each piece of your farming equipment a test run. Make sure each machine is working properly and efficiently. This may be a timely process, especially if you own many machines, but it can save you a ton of trouble in the spring. Identifying which pieces of equipment need major maintenance and which are running smoothly allows you time to fix any issues that arise during testing, well before spring completely hits.
