Musings

I can’t believe it. It’s amazing. What, you ask? I just returned from walking to the post office in this 100 degree heat. Not smart, I know….I just didn’t think about going earlier, so the heat of the day it was.

When I was walking back, a car stopped at the stop sign the same time I reached in and needed to cross. I waited, allowing the car to go first, because as I have lamented in this space before, pedestrians don’t get much respect around this town. Well, the driver insisted I go ahead and cross. So I did. Guess what, he was turning left, so I was in the way again. Did he turn? No, he or she waited for me to cross the next street. Thank you!!!

I don’t know who it was sitting in his or her air conditioned car waiting on me to cross, but I sure appreciate it. The car didn’t even turn as I was stepping up on the sidewalk. It waited until I was all the way across! It shouldn’t be such a surprise, but it is definitely the exception, not the rule, that I as a pedestrian am yielded to by a car.

I have told many that I am likely to die being run over by a truck. I, as a pedestrian, often demand the right-of-way. Dumb, I know. Those cars and trucks can take me out in a minute. But, I like to assert myself sometimes, and so far everybody has stopped, rather than plow me down.

But, like the lady who wrote the letter to the editor last week, one day that driver is going to be on the phone and not see me. Y’all pray for me.

Actually since the drug store moved I don’t cross at that intersection (Washington at Forsyth) nearly as much as I used to. But, I still do it some.

I mentioned the heat. That seems to be the talk of the day…record high temperatures. It’s August, and it’s hot. I’m lucky, I work indoors, in the air conditioning, and don’t have a lot of reason to be outside when I get off work. So, I am staying pretty much sequestered in air conditioning, and the heat doesn’t get to me that much.

Last weekend, however, Jimmy and I headed to the coast so he could go crabbing. We stayed at Skidaway Island State Park, and he puts his crab pots in not far from the state park. And, it’s a beautiful place to say.

Well Friday afternoon, we put the boat in and went out on the water to drop the crab pots. It wasn’t stifling, cause we were on a boat with a breeze. We got back to camp, and it was like the humidity went up and the temperature too.

The heat was oppressive, and the grill that was provided required Jimmy to watch the wings while they cooked…no leaving them sit and coming into the air, and going back to check on them. Nope. He had to stay out there and watch them. And the front of the grill was open, so that heat came right at him. Boy was he hot.

But, he did a good job cooking us some hot wings, and we enjoyed them in the air conditioning inside the cabin. Saturday, he decided to just let the crab pots sit, and he would check them when he pulled them out Sunday.

So, we “chilled’ Saturday, literally. We spent some time in the cabin, then we went riding in the air conditioned truck. We checked out more boat ramps and the area in general. We were lazy. After we had seen all the countryside we wanted to, we headed back to the A/C cabin.

No overheating for us Saturday…we know how to stay cool! Hope y’all do!
