Happy Father’s Day

We all have one, a father that is. Some may have never known theirs, some may have lost theirs very young or you may have been there to hold their hand until their last breath. Fathers are special, after all they are responsible for half of each of us.

My father worked as a tire builder at Firestone and came home smelling like rubber. His fingernails were permanently stained from making tires. He liked to dress up in a nice suit on Sunday. I would polish his shoes. I liked to watch him shave and see how he masterfully avoided cutting himself while maneuvering the razor around the large dent he had in his chin. Afterwards, he came out in a waft of Aqua Velva after shave. He also wrote poetry.

Fathers are harder to buy for than mothers. On Mother’s Day, moms get pretty cards, flowers, nice jewelry, or clothing. This year the ads for Father’s Day gifts include car mats, power tools, and shirts. Most fathers would enjoy an afternoon in the recliner watching a baseball game or golf tournament through their closed eyelids.
