Things Change

If you have been downtown lately, you will notice that a couple of houses are being torn down.

For years one of the houses, a two-story house, one block off the Square, has been MeMe’s Antique Store. Built during a period of architecture known as the Victorian age, named for Queen Victoria of England who reigned from 1837 to 1901, this house also had gingerbread features which are described as frills and geegaws, fancy carved pieces of wood. Before long this house will be completely gone, change is comin’.

From the 1930s when the bo’ evil sent one-half of our county population to cities for jobs, Jasper County remained stagnated, but change was coming.

As more baby boomers retired and moved “to the country,” many found Jasper County.

Turtle Cove community, now 48 years old, has grown many times over the original homeowners of small A-frames, log homes and even those in campers. Jackson Lake has been a magnet for those wanting some of that country with two more communities now being built.
