Civic Club Honors Student, Teacher
Riley Burton was honored as student of the month, and she chose Amy Scroggs as her teacher who was honored at the Monticello Civic Club last Thursday.
Miss Burton is third in the senior class, and plans to attend the University of Georgia and major in biology. She takes part in the work-based learning program at school, leaving early each day to go to her job with Tricia Armistead C.P.A.
She said that she chose Mrs. Scroggs because she understands there is more to life than school work. She said, now she makes us do our assignments, but understands when, like during tax season, that Miss Burton needed to get to the job.
While in school Miss Burton has been enrolled in the biotechnology program, and won prizes at the state science fair twice. She won a cash prize, when she along with other students, prepared a program on pine beetles. They presented that program to the members of Monticello Civic Club last year.
Mrs. Scroggs had high praise for Miss. Burton, saying she was one of the first students chosen to help with elections. She was trained on running the voting machines, and did such a good job that the registrar and probate judge plan to continue to use students.
Mrs. Scroggs said Miss Burton is the kind of student every teacher loves to have in class. She is quiet and pleasant in her financial literacy class. She is getting real life experience through the work-based learning. She told that Miss Burton had an opportunity to take an advanced chemistry class, but chose to stay with Mrs. Scroggs, saying she felt like she needed the class.
Mrs. Scroggs concurred, saying she felt it should be a required class. She was excited that Miss Burton made that choice, and described her as an “ideal student.”
The honorees had their photo made with Civic Club president Kathy Mudd. The club is now off for the summer, and will meet August 15.
