JCCS Cloud Campus Available
The Jasper County Charter System (JCCS) announces the launch of a new Digital Learning Days Platform called “Cloud Campus.” This new platform will allow for the extension and enrichment of student learning when school is canceled due to weather events, such as snow, ice storms, hurricanes or other emergency school closings.
The idea for the Cloud Campus began last year when other metro Atlanta school districts began using digital learning days to avoid making up days missed due to inclement weather.
“The first step to determine if this was possible for Jasper County,” according to Ty Snyder, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, “was to survey the community to determine the internet capacity of our community and families.” That survey, released via email, Facebook and hard copies sent home with all students, was completed in October, and according to Mr. Snyder had almost a thousand responses.
“This was the largest response to any survey we have released in many years,” said Mr. Snyder. The results showed that around 85 percent of families in Jasper County Schools had some type of internet access. Of those with internet, 75 percent said they had the data available each month to allow students to work online.
How do the digital learning days work? When there is an announcement that schools will be closed for the day, parents or students will be able log on to the JCCS web page. A pop-up alert will appear – just click on that alert and it will take the user directly to the Cloud Campus page.
On Cloud Campus, parents and students can locate their school and find the Digital Learning Day assignment for their grade level. There will be a list of office hours for each school where parents and students can email teachers for direct assistance.
Dr. Kristie Brooks, Executive Director of Instructional Support Services said, “Of course we don’t expect students to work at home as long as they would at school; that’s not practical or realistic. The length of the digital learning day will depend on the grade level of the student but our general expectations are that pre-K and primary students would work 30-45 minutes, elementary students would work around 60 minutes, and middle and high school students would put in around two hours of work.”
