FIRE SAFETY WEEK
With Fire Prevention Week here, our local Public Safety agencies have been teaching and reminding our local children about how to stay safe in emergencies.
Last Friday Shiloh Christian Academy hosted Jasper County Fire Rescue, Jasper County Sheriff’s Office, Jasper County Public Health, and AirMethods along with the educational Smoke House on loan from Putnam County.
All the children were able to touch, tour, and inquire about the fire engine, ambulance, police car, smoke house, and helicopter. RN Christa McMillian was also there to provide flu shots and valuable information about hygiene during the flu season.
The younger elementary kids loved being up close to the firefighters to touch the heavy equipment, practicing crawling through the smokehouse becoming confident in their escape skills, and left excited to go home and implement their family’s fire escape plan.
The older teens were refreshed on what to do if a grease fire broke out in their kitchen as well always having two ways out of every room in the home. They left knowing that with today’s synthetic materials throughout our homes, people now only have on average 3-4 minutes to get out. They also learned how valuable it is when they sleep over at a friend’s house to know their escape plan as well.
If you don’t already have one or one that you’ve practiced in a while: make a family fire escape plan! Most fires start between 11p.m.-7a.m., when it’s dark and you’re asleep. Knowing, and your children knowing, how to get out when its dark and where to meet is a very simple and LIFE-SAVING tool for your family!
Can your children get out their window if their door is blocked by smoke and fire? Can they unlock and open the window by themselves in the dark (or with their eyes closed) and get out? If not, please work on that TODAY.
This week more Fire Safety Week presentations will be held at our other local schools.
As a reminder, there are few more CPR spots available if your child is between 10-15 years old. This coming Friday from 4-6:30p.m. or next Monday from 4-6:30p.m. your child can learn Adult/Child/Infant CPR, Choking rescue, and AED use. Get them registered at https://tinyurl.com/kidCPR4HS
