Young Georgia Authors Recognized

Jasper County Primary School (JCPS) students swept the kindergarten through second grade categories in the District Young Georgia Authors Competition while several other Jasper County students placed well.

The three JCPS students that were selected as Middle Georgia Regional Young Georgia Authors winners includekindergarten student Arianna Autrey, first grader Faraday Harty, and second grader Mai Jordan.

Principal Pam Edge said, “The Young Georgia Authors competition began in January at JCPS. Students submitted an original, unassisted piece of writing for the competition. Autrey, Harty, and Jordan were selected as grade level winners and advanced to the district competition. JCPS students and staff would like to congratulate the winners and wish them luck as they advance to the state competition!”

District Coordinator Stephanie Willocks added, “Young Georgia Authors is a statewide writing competition for K-12 students in Georgia public schools. The purpose of the contest is to encourage students in their writing and to help develop an enthusiasm for writing. Students submit an original piece of writing that is first judged at their own school. The first place winners then compete with other schools in the RESA networks. From there, the contestants’ writing moves on to the state level.”

In addition to the JCPS winners, Jasper County Charter System had two other first place Middle Georgia RESA winners this year. Leigha Perkins, a fourth grader at Washington Park Elementary School. Willow Hammond, an eighth grader at Jasper County Middle School, also finished in first place. She is pictured with her Language Arts teacher Mary Harris.

All of these students will now be competing with other winners from across the state.
