FBLA Collects for Houston Classroom
The Jasper County High School Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) is currently collecting basic school supplies to help students in a Houston, TX high school.
The project came about when Mrs. Amy Scroggs, FBLA adviser, saw an opportunity on social media several weeks ago as Hurricane Harvey was making its way through Texas. The announcement was asking for high school teachers to partner with Houston high school teachers to help replenish some of what was lost in the hurricane.
Mrs. Scroggs completed the application process on behalf of FBLA and received notification last week that the JCHS FBLA had been partnered with a class at C.E. King High School in Houston. She made contact with Olivia Lujan, the chemistry/physics teacher, who specifically asked for basic school supplies.
Ms. Lujan explained that most of her students had lost everything during the hurricane, so basic school supplies was not really high on the priority list of things to replace. She asked if the JCHS FBLA could possibly send general school supplies to help give the Houston students what they need.
With that challenge, the JCHS FBLA is now collecting basic school supplies such as notebook paper, pencils, pens, 3-prong folders, markers, index cards, highlighters, dry-erase markers, colored pencils, etc.
Anyone wishing to donate supplies may drop them off at the JCHS front office or at Monticello Baptist Church. Anyone wishing to make a monetary donation to the project to help with shipping costs, please send checks made out to JCHS to Amy Scroggs, JCHS, 14477 Hwy. 11 North, Monticello, GA 31064.
“I can’t even imagine going back to my classroom last Thursday and having lost everything,” Mrs. Scroggs said after missing three days of school due to Hurricane Irma. “And I really can’t imagine my students having lost everything in their homes and then being expected to return to school without the necessities. If we at JCHS can help make a difficult situation a little easier for the Houston students, then we want to make that happen.”
Several boxes of supplies have already been shipped to Houston, but the collection will continue through Friday, Sept. 29. For more information, interested persons may contact Mrs. Scroggs at 678-232-1421.
