Back-To-School
Welcome back to school, Jasper County and Piedmont Academy students.
Schools have existed in our county since the early 1800s. If you’re interested, you can see quite a few pictures and read articles about our schools at www.rootsweb.ancestry.com,
What is now our civic center located on College Street was previously the public high school built in 1921 to replace a wooden building. College Street? Was there ever a college on College Street?
The history of schools in America dates back to 1635 when Boston Latin School was opened. The school is still open today. Boston Latin encouraged dissent with responsibility. It is no wonder that the seeds of our revolution sprouted in Boston. Five of the students later were signers of the Declaration of Independence.
History, reminders of the past, is a favorite subject. If you studied history in high school, say 50 years ago, pick up a history book today and you’ll be surprised by the differences. So not only does history repeat itself, history also changes with the perspective of the moment.
Learning is a lifelong project, in other words, we are forever students.
