Vacation

For most families the summer is when family vacations are taken. Excitement and adventures are waiting! But taking a few extra moments in preparing for your vacation can help ensure a stress-free return to your home. Several things to consider adding to your checklist.

1) First, call the non-emergency number at the Sheriff’s Department and request a Residence Check. The awesome folks at the Communications Center will take some information and while you’re away a deputy will check on your property.

For families who don’t have the benefit of a home security system or having family or a neighbor check the home, it is a great benefit our Sheriff’s Office has extended to our citizens.

2) While shutting off the water to your home usually isn’t available, ensuring that any leaky appliances you may have has the water shut off to them is important. If you’re on well water, simply shutting off the power to the water pump at the breaker box is a great way to stem any busted hot water heater or other water-based appliance while you’re away.

3) Unplugging non-essential electrical items. While it may be sunny where you’re at, you never know what storms may roll across Jasper County. Unplugging your investment in your TV and/or computers will ensure you’re not buying new ones when you get home after an electrical surge.

4) One of the most important and least utilized tips is to close all interior doors in your home. A fire needs three components to exist: heat, fuel, and oxygen. If any one of these elements are taken away, the direction and expansion of that fire is altered, if not completely eliminated. Closing interior doors can prevent a one room fire from expanding throughout your home.

Here is to wishing you a great vacation with many pictures and memories made!

Your neighbors here in Jasper County look forward to your safe return!
