Our Teachers Are Tops
Last Friday, the Monticello Kiwanis Club held its annual art and talent showcase, and I volunteered to help. I was assigned to corralling the children waiting to perform. (No small feat for the young ones.)
But, as happens every time I visit any of the schools, I was simply amazed at what I saw. Not only was there the many young people preparing to strut their stuff by showing off their talent, the high school was busy with rehearsal for the spring musical.
Besides the teachers who volunteer to help with the talent show, and the students performing, there were a number of high school students and at least two teachers staying after school on Friday afternoon to practice for the upcoming event. I initially was amazed that the students willingly put off the start of their weekend to do this preparation. Then I thought about the teachers. Here they are, late Friday afternoon still at the school to support the young people they teach every day.
And, they were cheerful. I had my own job to do, so I wasn’t able to watch them much, but Lianna Nix was working with students on their lines, while across the hall Bobbi Sauls was working on the musical end of it. What an amazing two ladies. And, the thing about it is, I know our schools are full of teachers just like them. Willing to go the extra mile to get a little more out of each student. It’s so refreshing.
When my children were in school, they had amazing teachers just like the ones there now (some of the ones who are there now). But, I don’t think I appreciated them as much then. As I attend school board meetings, and learn more about what is expected at the top, then visit the schools, and see what’s happening, I can’t help but be proud. I also had occasion to attend a School Governance Team meeting last week, and learn a little more about the inside workings of a school.
We have a good school system with the most important asset being our great, caring teachers. I sure am proud to live in a community that cares so much about its children. Thank you teachers; keep up the good work!
