Football Traffic
For once, GPS-guided semi-trailer trucks that use our little two-laned roads as the non-existent bypass from I-75 to I-20 were not to blame for the traffic jam on the square this past Friday.
As we all know, at least the ones that frequent downtown, all roads do lead to Monticello especially when there is a home game at the University of Georgia.
Tailgating fans packed our roads with all forms of trailers and RVs. Watching them maneuver the square was quite amusing as we have made their drive more challenging by having two stoplights, five stop signs and two yield signs within 100 feet of each other. Ah, if only it was legal to install a toll gate, how much money would that bring into the coffers of Jasper County.
Even more fun was exiting a parking space that day. Timing was key. How-to back out of the parking space while watching for oncoming traffic in two or three directions at the same time was not included in the Georgia Driving Manual.
“If you are trying to back out of a parking space and have traffic coming in three different directions at the same time, what should you do? A. Slowly back out of the parking space hoping for divine intervention B. Enlist a person walking around to stop traffic with their body C. Tie a string on your steering wheel to remind you to never park on the square on UGA Homecoming Weekend.”
Unfortunately, the Bulldawgs were not the victors against the ‘Dores this year. The 76-year rivalry dates back to 1898 with Georgia winning 55 of those years. Next game is the infamous Georgia-Florida meet in Jacksonville. Let the Big Dog chomp the Gator!
Good luck to our ‘Canes and Cougars, too!
