Now That’s A Big Hole in the Ground

My family and I had the privilege of venturing out west this summer. While we were in the neighborhood, we stopped by to see the Grand Canyon in Arizona. Now, that’s a big hole in the ground.

I was amazed at how vast the view was. From rim to rim the Grand Canyon averages around 13 miles across. The Grand Canyon averages about a mile deep. If you have not had the chance to see it yet, the Grand Canyon is massive.

When standing on the rim and looking across and down, I was struck by the creativity of God. He chose to place a huge canyon that would wow and amaze us in just that spot. The levels and layers are beautiful. The Colorado River meandering through the canyon floor is dwarfed by the canyon walls and rock formations. The sight is truly breathtaking. And, God’s hand was behind it all.

Psalm 95:3-5 says this: “For the Lord is the great God, the great King above all gods. In his hand are the depths of the earth, and the mountain peaks belong to him. The sea is his, for he made it, and his hands formed the dry land” (NIV).

God holds this earth in his hands. The sea is his because he made it. The dry land is his because he formed it. The incredible beauty of this world can only be attributed to the God who creatively designed it then brought it to be. Wow! What a great artist! What a great creator! What a great God!

What is the proper response to such a great God? Psalm 95 continues in verses 6 and 7 with these words: “Come, let us bow down in worship, let us kneel before the Lord our Maker; for he is our God and we are the people of his pasture, the flock under his care” (NIV).

The proper response to the God who has created it all, including the majestic Grand Canyon, is to “bow down in worship” and to “kneel before the Lord our Maker.” When we acknowledge that God has made it all, then we should be moved to worshipping him in spirit and truth.

From the majesty of the world around us, we learn of God’s creative character. Then, when we consider that he made us too, we should be amazed at the intricacy and the detail he puts into his fantastic creation. From the overwhelming splendor of the Grand Canyon to the detail and masterful work of creating a hand that can move and carry and type. Amazing!

God can do the big things well. And, God can pay close attention to details. He surely does deserve our worship.

God can handle the big things in your life well. And, He can handle the day to day small things, too. Let’s worship him for being the God of the big and the God of the small.
