Piedmont Holds Honor Society Induction

On January 7, the ninth induction of the National Honors Society was held in the Piedmont Academy gymnasium.

The requirements for admission into the school’s chapter are based on the national standards, but, as allowed by the NHS Constitution, Piedmont is allowed to set their chapter standards higher than the minimum set by the national group. Based on both the students’ applications and on the interviews before the faculty council, students were admitted if they meet the other national standards of character, leadership, and service.

Once students are identified with the grade point average (GPA) necessary to join, they complete an application and have a live interview with the Faculty Council. This year’s faculty council members were Ralph Hickman, Daniel Funt, Alvin Hawkes, Leslie White, and Kirstie Lewis.

Upon completion of the interviewing process, the faculty council deliberates and selects new inductees based on the four criteria of NHS: scholarship, service, leadership, and character.

This year’s NHS class is distinguished as the largest group of students ever inducted into Piedmont’s chapter, and it includes the largest number of students from any particular high school class as nine members of the Class of 2018 were inducted.

New students inducted into the club are Ivy English, Alicia Peek, Kylie Garner, Morgan Spivey, Grayson Bradley, Mikayla Rigsby, Anne Marie Hildebrant (back row) Kevin Davis, Chris Coogler, Mack Brady, Wyatt Galloway, Jackson Waddleton and Ian Boyd. Not pictured are Summer Conley and Morgan Johnston.

Also honored at the ceremony were members of the Class of 2016 NHS members. These members include Haley Tyler, Chris Coogler, Summer Collins, Summer Conley, Amelia Dodson, Alicia Peek, Chris Cain, Steve Martin, Matti Smith, Becca Hopper, Taylor Swart, and Morgan Leach. These seniors received their NHS pins during the ceremony.

Special thanks to Mesdames Judy Nelson, Wendy Wood, and Alison Hildebrant for helping to prepare the stage and refreshments for the ceremony. Also, a very special thank you to Piedmont’s faculty sponsor, Mrs. Angie Marks.
