This ‘N That
In my inbox this week was a reminder from the American Red Cross about the blood drive Monday at Monticello Baptist Church. There is an urgent need for blood the e-mail said.
I am a universal donor, and therefore try to give as often as feasible. The Red Cross has been visiting Monticello about every two months lately, so if you give each time, that’s good. I went to Milledgeville about eight weeks ago, as the planned drive here was cancelled.
I want to urge every healthy individual to give blood. It is almost painless, and one donation can save several lives or enrich several lives. No one expects to ever need blood, but people do every day. And if it weren’t for volunteer donors, there would be no blood.
The donation process takes only about an hour. It’s worth an hour out of the day to save a life or two. I, for one, will be returning from out of town, so have not made an appointment, but since they will be there from 3 to 7 p.m., I have every intention of being able to donate. And, there’s a few people I know I’ll see. I’d love to see new faces!

Speaking of being out of town. My husband, Jimmy, turns 60 Sunday. He’s so excited. I jest. He is not at all excited about turning 60. He determined months ago that he wanted to go out of town for this big birthday. I think he was afraid I’d surprise him with a party like I did when he turned 50.
He’s been making noises this week to let me know he’s concerned about the upcoming birthday. I am almost a year younger, so I’m not feeling his pain. I do remember when my grandparents were 60. They were old.
These milestone birthdays can be difficult, but in reality, at our age time does fly. I see plenty of spry people 20 years older, so I don’t think 60 is really old. It’s amazing how our perspective changes.
I mentioned we were going out of town. Jimmy wanted to go to Las Vegas for his birthday but we could never find a flight that suited our budget and our schedule. So, we are headed to Biloxi.
I hate we picked the 10 year anniversary of Katrina. But, I don’t think that will dampen our fun. We’ll visit the casinos, the beach and the restaurants. It will be fun!
And we’ve been preparing by playing slot machines on our tablets. I am a gamer…with my staples being solitaire, words with friends, yahtzee, and trivia crack (most of which require some brain work).
But Jimmy got me started on a slot game that is lots of fun so I’ve added that to my list of games I play most days. I really should read more. However, I’ve seen several studies that say games like these keep your mind sharp. Mine should be plenty sharp. So, if you catch me playing solitaire at my desk, know that my mind is engaged in conversation, while my hands play the cards.
And, if you see Jimmy, tell him Happy Birthday, and know that before this time next year, I’ll be joining him as an “old” person. (My apologies to my elders, who still aren’t old.)
