A Tour of the News Offices

I’ve told you about my spacious office, which I share with Hannah, and Susan’s spacious office, which she only occasionally shares; now it’s time to tell you about where the advertising, bookkeeping, layout, and more gets done.

Jenny Murphy (my little sister), and Victoria Lawrence share the back office. Some will remember it from Tillman House days where the coffee club (sometimes referred to as liar‘s club) met each morning. Victoria sits in that area of the office, with her desk between two windows. She does the bookkeeping, legals, classifieds, church news, and more.

We also lay out the paper in there. We actually lay out the paper on the computer, but we print each page, and place it on the layout boards there. So, they don’t have the room to breathe that Susan and I enjoy.

Jenny is the advertising manager and makes up most of the ads that are in the newspaper. She also serves as photo editor, second in charge, gopher, and lots more. She is the official office opener each morning, too. She also tends to the cats (comes with being first in), and you’ll notice one of the cats in her lap in the photo.

She sometimes has a hard time getting her work done for cats on her scanner or keyboard or copy. But, she gets it done!

Their office is gray in color, a neutral color selected by Victoria who we also sometimes call “Blondie.” We are certain that blonde hair has blonde roots. It also features beautiful woodwork around the doors and windows, like the rest of the building.

Jenny’s desk is catty-corner in the corner looking into Susan’ office on her left, and out the three large windows on her right. She lets us know what’s happening as the new owner of what used to be The News office goes about fixing up that building.

Like the other offices, it has four large lights, as well as a ceiling fan and light in the center of the room. The floors are not real level, as it’s hard to achieve perfection in a building as old as this one.

In addition to their work areas and the layout boards, that room also holds the fax machine, credit card machine, and the printers that everything is printed to.

I’m not sure we thought this through when we planned this, as they are a bit cramped compared to Susan and me. But, for now, that’s the way it is.
