Weather Woes

Weather is a funny thing. We complain about it. We wish it was warmer in the winter. In the summer it’s too hot.

My baby, Emily, has just moved to Colorado, arriving last Saturday. It was interesting as I checked the weather on my phone Saturday afternoon—it was 55 degrees in Monticello, in Jacksonville, Fla., and in Denver, Colo.

We told Emily we would come see her in the summer…we didn’t want to experience Denver’s cold. And, yes, I’m glad she’s going to learn to ski, and enjoy the great outdoors…I for one enjoy mild temperatures.

At this writing the threat of any frozen precipitation in our area is not history. The weather forecasters got us excited (or scared) over the weekend as the winter storm advisory made it almost to Jasper County. Now they say it ain’t so. Even though by the time you get your newspaper, it promises to be very cold, the rain will have moved out and we will make it another week without snow or ice, or at least that’s what the weatherman says.

For those of us who have to come up with a photo to go on the front page of this paper every week, the thought of winter weather is exciting….we can get photos for the paper. I’d much prefer a wintry landscape to a fatal house fire on my front page.

But, alas it is not to be.

As for Emily, she is under threat of $150 penalty to shovel her walk within 24 hours of the first snow sticking. She got flurries Sunday, but as of Monday there was no appreciable amount of snow.

And, she’s not in Denver. She’s in Greeley, about an hour away. But my phone didn’t recognize Greeley when I put it in, so Denver is close enough to have an idea of what she is facing.

As for Emily moving to Colorado, many ask why? Because she’s young and she can. She and her boyfriend decided that’s what they wanted to do, and they moved in with me to save some money, stayed three and half months, and they were off to the great Rockies. I’m going to miss her terribly, but I wouldn’t hold her back for anything. Besides, before she moved in with me she lived in Newnan, an hour and half away. And, we saw each other less than monthly. So, we’ll adjust. We’ll talk. We’ll even use those new phone apps where you can see the other person. And, we’ll visit.

I’m going to try to go there in June, and they plan to come home for Christmas. I’ll keep you posted on how homesick she gets, and how much I miss her. For now, I hope she finds a good job and enjoys her adventure. And, if not, there’s no place like home where she’s always welcome back.
