What Jesus Wanted that I Need Too

We have so much we can learn from Jesus. When He left His heavenly dwelling to come to this earth and experience life as a human, He gave us the best possible example of how to live. Part of that example came as He showed us how to connect to the Heavenly Father in a way that sustains us, guides us, and empowers us.

Mark 1:35 says this:

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark, Jesus got up, left the house and went off to a solitary place, where he prayed. (NIV84)

Think about this for a moment: We see that Jesus had this incredible desire to connect with His Father. The One who presumably needed to spend time with His Father least desired to spend time with His Father most.

How ludicrous is it to think that we can live for the Lord, or even make it through this day, without also connecting with our Heavenly Father? How can it be that we who need to spend time with the Father the most, can be too distracted or too complacent or too busy to make that time with the Lord a high priority for today?

We usually find excuses to let our time in God’s word and our time in prayer slip. But, Jesus faced those issues too, and He still made the time. Why? Because it was that important to Him.

We say…I’m too busy.

Notice what Jesus faced the previous day:

That evening after sunset the people brought to Jesus all the sick and demon-possessed. The whole town gathered at the door, and Jesus healed many who had various diseases. He also drove out many demons, but he would not let the demons speak because they knew who he was (Mark 1:32-35, NIV84).

The night before Jesus got up very early in the morning to go pray was filled with Jesus meeting ministry needs, healing people, and driving out demons. Jesus was busy doing ministry, but not too busy to spend time with His Father.

We say…people need me.

Notice what was said when His disciples finally found Jesus:

Simon and his companions went to look for him, and when they found him, they exclaimed: “Everyone is looking for you!” (Mark 1:36-37, NIV84).

Jesus was in high demand. Everyone wanted to know where He was. His fame was growing quickly. Jesus had people clamoring for His time and attention, but it was more important for Him to spend time with His Father.

We say…I’m just too tired.

Repeating Mark 1:35:

Very early in the morning, while it was still dark….

Jesus was undoubtedly tired. But, spending time with His Father was more important than sleep. He could go without sleep, but He could not go without His time with His Father.

May we not let anything come before our time with our Heavenly Father. Let’s seek Him daily. If Jesus could overcome the excuses, we should too. We should desire that time with the Father. Jesus did.
