Board Hears About Maintenance Issues
Members of the Jasper County School Board heard an update on the roof repairs that are needed at Jasper County Primary School (JCPS) during their regular board meeting Tuesday.
James Wilson with Education Planners spoke to the board on how the current roof, which is about 20 years old, and how it has worn. He showed pictures from atop the roof and showed that the old roof does not allow for the water to escape and the edges of the roof are the most worn causing a majority of the leaks.
Mr. Wilson explained to the board that when replacing the roof, they needed “the right roof, materials, and company to do the work and honor the warranty that comes with that type of commercial job.” He also said that having the gutters done correctly would allow for proper drainage.
Mr. Wilson also agreed after more discussion on the Jasper County High School (JCHS) roof that he would go up on it and evaluate how to repair it. According to Perry Hyde, Maintenance Supervisor for Jasper County Schools, JCHS is only seven years old and the roof has had leaks for seven years.
Mr. Hyde also told board members that bids would be going out for HVAC work to be done. He said that he was going to more wall hung units and away from roof top units with the exception of in the main offices, media centers, and cafeterias.
The board heard that financials were in good standing as currently the year is 42 percent complete with revenues being above expenditures. The board was told that tax collections were coming in and that was good.
The board voted to pass a policy on public participation that allows public participation during all board meetings. Those wishing to speak to the board could sign up before a meeting and will be allowed three minutes for comment. There are rules, however as children’s and faculty names can not be mentioned along with other guidelines. A full reading of policy of BCBI, Public Participation can be found on the school’s eboard website at www.jasper.k12.ga.us.
Board members received a plaque as they have earned the title of GSBA Distinguished Board, the highest honor given by the Georgia School Board Association currently.
As far as personnel, Tiffany Kelley was hired as a school food manager and RaNae Fendley was hired as the new Social Services director, as Princess Clarke will retire at the end of the month. Matthew Garvin was approved to transfer from a PEC paraprofessional at JCPS to the same position at JCHS.
