Kin to Everyone

If you are a newcomer to Jasper County, maybe you’ve noticed that everyone around here is kin to each other or at the least they are fourth cousins on their fathers’ side. Advice to the wise, keep your comments to your self! Don’t get caught mouthing off about someone, just to hear, “Why she’s my brother-in-laws’ sister-in-law.”

In local grocery stores, restaurants, pharmacies or just about anywhere, even if their not kin, everyone knows each other and have long conversations clogging up the aisles.

On a recent trip to the grocery, I was passing a woman on the coffee aisle with apparently a big problem choosing a can of coffee as she commented loud enough for me to hear, “These coffee prices sure are high, you know I have to drink decaf coffee now.”

No, I was not aware of her coffee requirements, but she proceeded to give me her life history of illnesses which included showing me her scar from a pacemaker. Her diet was so limited now she cried, “No pork!”

It was just about then I noticed that she had a ham shoulder and six cans of Vienna sausages in her shopping cart. Call me crazy, but I am pretty sure that ham is pork and Vienna sausages are not included on the diet of a person sporting a pacemaker.

Don’t labor too much on Labor Day, Monticello!!
