Greatest Two Minutes in Sports
They call it the “Greatest two minutes in sports,” and this Saturday at 6:24 p.m. don’t blink or you will miss the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby.
Twenty horses will fly around the mile and a quarter track this year.
Every year there is a favorite horse and this year’s pick is California Chrome, “an alpha pony with four white feet and a wide band of white from the nose to the ears.” Naturally the horse is from California, the son of Lucky Pulpit and Love the Chase. He is owned by the stables with the initials of “DAP”. “DAP” is a great story, but not in this family newspaper.
Hats, hats, hats, the great tradition of the fancy chapeaus being worn by the beautiful people, it’s a Derby thang.
Look for the beautiful lavender and pink silks worn by the jockey astride Dance with Fate. Three time winner of the Derby, eight Triple Crown wins, and the star of the movie, “Seabiscuit”, Gary Stevens, will be aboard Derby hopeful, Candy Boy.
It’s hard not to love the excitement of hearing the announcer as he yells, “And as they come down the stretch….”
