Pair Wins Gold in STAR Competition
Brandi McMichael and Ashton Chapman received gold medals in the Students Taking Action with Recognition (STAR) competition area of Illustrated Talk at the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America’s (FCCLA) 2014 State Leadership Conference.
In preparation for district and state competition, Brandi and Ashton helped organize and implement a Christmas party for foster children. The children at the party visited with Santa, received gifts collected by FCCLA, played games and made crafts.
Gracie Cummings, Kolby DeGarmo and Samantha Tally received silver medals in the State Chapter Service Project Display STAR competition.
Gracie, Kolby and Samantha planned and led young children in an afternoon of activities at a local daycare. These activities were centered around the Dr. Seuss book, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” The girls also organized, decorated and maintained a booth at First Foundation’s Seuss on the Loose event in early March. Their booth was centered around the same book.
Madelyn Piper and Elisabeth Ricks also received silver medals in the State Focus on Children STAR competition.
Madelyn and Elisabeth taught students health for half a day, coordinating with Amanda Jenkins, the physical education teacher at Jasper County Primary School. All of their activities with the children were based on making healthy choices.
All of the girls completed in-depth projects in which they contributed to the Jasper County community.
FCCLA’s STAR Events are based on the belief that every student is a winner. Competition, evaluation and recognition all stress cooperation as the basis of success.
Throughout the year, FCCLA members tackle issues such as teen violence prevention, traffic safety, family issues, career exploration, and much more. FCCLA programs and competitions enrich student learning, improve self-esteem and serve students with a range of ability levels, economic situations and cultural influences.
FCCLA is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has over 200,000 members and over 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since its founding in 1945.
FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experience is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus.
