Marching Hurricanes Visit Disney World

The Jasper County High School Marching Hurricanes participated in the “You’re Instrumental!” workshop at Disney World during a special spring break trip last week.

The group left Friday evening, March 28, and returned Tuesday morning, April 1.

The Marching Hurricanes spent a day each at Epcot, Hollywood Studios and Magic Kingdom. The band and music teachers put together a scavenger hunt for interested students to complete while in the parks that included items such as taking pictures with various Disney characters.

Everyone rode rides, tried new foods and had a great time in the parks.

During the workshop, students learned how to get the most out of rehearsals and improve sight-reading skills under the guidance of an experienced Disney clinician. The clinician impressed upon the students the importance of being professional and striving to play with accuracy and musicality the first time, especially since recording sessions can often be very expensive.

At the conclusion of the session, the students were recorded performing the Oscar-winning song “A Whole New World” accompanied by footage from Disney’s 1992 animated film Aladdin.

Thanks to all of the chaperones, Jasper County High School band director Chris Savage, Jasper County Middle School band director Ray Buck, and Jasper County Primary School and Washington Park Elementary School music teacher Kim Savage, as well as Mandy Billings, Jodi Bishop, Erin Buck, Patty Cole, Susan Evans, Matt Jernigan, Christy Jordan, Rhonda Lane, Adrienne Liveoak, Michelle Norwood, Denise Parker and Bobbi Sauls who made the trip possible.

Students making the trip included Tristan Armstrong, Jacob Bell, Tayler Bowden, Briana Boyer, Ashton Chapman, Gracie Cummings, Brody DeGarmo, Kolby DeGarmo, Ashley DeVane, Taylor Edwards, Clay Evans, Kellie Evans, Levi Ford, Noah Hanson, Ben Hart, Levi Head, Jesse King, Megan Litz and Jesse Liveoak.
