Piedmont Looks To New Year
Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams are now off until January following games against John Milledge Academy and Gatewood last week.
The varsity boys fell to Gatewood Thursday 73-33 despite 15 points by Chandler Burrell. The Cougars also fell to John Milledge 74-26 at home December 18. Burrell paced the team again with 10 points while Zach Wilson added six points. Zach Beggs and Hank Strickland both finished with four and Brady scored two.
Piedmont’s varsity boys also played two games in a tournament hosted by Monsignor Donovan in Athens Friday and Saturday. The Cougars fell to host Monsignor Donovan 65-36 on Friday as Beggs scored 11 points to lead the offense.
In Saturday’s consolation game against Bethlehem Christian Academy, Piedmont led by as many as 18 points but the Knights rallied for a 68-61 win. Beggs and Burrell both scored 17 points while Brady finished with 15.
Beggs was named to the All-Tournament team.
The Lady Cougars fell to Gatewood 43-10 Thursday. Savannah McGinnis led the team with four points while Amelia Dodson, Makennah Holifield and Cheyenne Galloway all scored two points.
Last Wednesday, Piedmont’s varsity girls were defeated by John Milledge 41-27. Remington Marsh scored two 3-pointers to lead the Lady Cougars with six points while Galloway, Haley Tyler and Anna Jones each scored four points. Madison Burnham added three points while Dodson, McGinnis and Beth Anne Mahaffey all scored two.
The Lady Cougars trailed just 28-22 after the third quarter against John Milledge, but were outscored 13-5 in the final eight minutes.
Piedmont Academy’s varsity basketball teams will return to action Jan. 3 at John Milledge beginning at 6 p.m.
