Students Visit High Museum
The Art Club at Jasper County High School visited the High Museum of Art in Atlanta November 12. Forty-one students attended the field trip to view the Go West: Art of the American Frontier exhibit.
Drawn from the collection of the Buffalo Bill Center of the West in Cody, Wyo., the exhibition features major works of art and important artifacts including paintings, drawings, sculpture, photographs, frontier firearms and objects from Native American cultures that showcase the exploration and settlement of the American West.
The exhibition spans 100 years of American art from 1830 to 1930 and features 257 objects presented chronologically and arranged thematically into 10 sections. This exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.
Through these objects, the exhibition highlights the ways visual images and stories of explorers and legendary western celebrities such as Buffalo Bill Cody, Annie Oakley and Chief Sitting Bull continue to inform American identity and character today.
Highlights of the visit included Frederic Remington oil paintings and sculptures and traditional Native American tribal wear and head dresses.
The group of JCHS students then enjoyed lunch at the historic downtown Atlanta Varsity. As the world’s largest drive-in, the Varsity is located on more than two acres and can accommodate 600 cars and over 800 people inside.
On days when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are playing a home game, over 30,000 people visit The Varsity.
The High Museum of Art is the leading art museum in the Southeastern U.S.
With more than 13,000 works of art in its permanent collection, the High has an extensive anthology of 19th- and 20th-century American and decorative art; significant holdings of European paintings; a growing collection of African American art; and burgeoning collections of modern and contemporary art, photography and African art.
Students who attended the field trip included Austin Blankenship, Sheree Long, Janel Eubanks, Natasha Gerstle, Donnell Wiggins, Taylor Sims, Claire Cunard, Cody Ward, Destiny Glawson, Lily Shaw, Lauryn Sumner, Kevin Lowe, Timothy McElvin, Devvon Williams, Jessie Murphy, Bree Chambers, Addison Rowly and Amy Brake.
Also, Emily Richardson, Willie Cosby, Davon Walker, Dianna Negron, India Rockmore, Tierra Whitlock, Taylor Moss, Madison Simons, Julieann Parr, Maggie O’Kelley, Katie Brennan, Jayme Wayt Kaleigh Tarleton, D.J. Strange, Sam Ballew, Kaitlin Norris, Gage Osborn, Casey Alwine, Jamie Maning, Marina Wiliams, Tanisha Ammons, Danielle Smith and Urial Garibay.
Chaperones included Cheryl Parr, Kimberly Williams, Suzette Gude and JCHS art teacher Jennifer O’Neal.
JCHS art is currently on display in a Chamber of Commerce window. The Art Club is also raising money for art supplies. They are currently selling customized signs (11” x 33”), such as signs that can be used as welcome signs on porches. All boards will have an antique finish, and the font color is black.
Patrons may choose the board color of their choice. Each sign is $30. The deadline for orders is Monday, Dec. 2, and all signs will be delivered by December 18.
