Choose to Live
Maybe you read last week’s “Commit to Be Fit” article and recognized the content. It was an article that had run in the paper before. After the events of the last few weeks and the loss of two small town heroes, my heart hurt and I couldn’t find any new words that when read, would honor these two boys and their families.
Although the hurt is still fresh, I am prepared to pay tribute through my words and attempt to make a connection to my readers.
I heard Valerie Harper, a 72 year old actress diagnosed with brain cancer, profess on television last night that she has only three months to live. She was smiling. In fact, she was euphoric when she spoke of this new journey she was embarking upon.
Her husband, however, was broken. Isn’t that how it always works? Those that have to stay, and watch and let go, suffer more than the dying. Her words of wisdom will be forever etched in my mind – “I’m not going to a funeral until I die, until then I’m going to live.”
Kevin and J.B., the two boys who died suddenly two weeks ago, lived! In fact, they were living the dream. They were doing exactly what they had prepared to do for many years.
The community watched in awe as these boys transformed into men. They were the epitome of strength, courage and commitment; and they had fun doing it.
We can’t predict when our time will come. That became intensely clear to me as we mourned the loss of these young men. But, what we can do is choose to live today.
As we continue our countdown to looking good in preparation for the warm weather months ahead, think about the fragility of life. Are you still making excuses for not accomplishing your fitness goals? Are you waiting for an incurable diagnosis or life-changing event to motivate you?
In honor of Johnathon and Kevin, don’t wait. Be the best you can be today. Live healthy, love deeply and commit to living without regret.
